I bought this book because I had no real choice not to. It was after all required by the teacher of a required English class. Much to my surprise I found it be a well organized, easy to read book that presented an approach to developing writing skills that I think I will think will help me develop writing skills without the usual pain. The book gives examples of the skill they want to develop then guides you through writing exercises designed for that skill. This is helping me to focus on each area in turn. I like the book. I am not usually a big fan of English books but this one will stay on my self long after the class is over.

This series is a summary of great classics of literature. There are brief biographies of the author and then an abbreviated version of the story is told by selecting key passages from the work in the author’s own words. There is sufficient information to tell if you will enjoy the theme of the book and the author’s writing style. For those books that you enjoy, I would recommend getting the full work because much is left out in the abbreviated version. Still, this is a wonderful introduction to many great works of literature.

Another good short story that couldn’t stand alone without prior knowledge of the SW universe. That being said, I liked this continuation of the Lost Tribe story. Taken from the perspective of a native on the planet, it gives a more unique view of the Sith that ended up on this world.

While it probably won’t end up having much to do with the story lines of the other actual novels it is back story for, this is a good little read.

I must admit when my fitness freak husband bought this book for me at Costco, I was very annoyed. I had just started exercising again and the pounds were coming off just fine, thank you. But I sat down and read it anyway and was hooked within 30 minutes. The science behind the book is so solid, I decided to try it anyways. That and the fact that I owned most of the “healthy” products on the “Belly Bad” side of the page. I realized that my latest ten pound gain was not due to my new post-35 slower metabolism; it was due to consuming one Fiber One bar, one Zone Perfect protein bar, and one tablespoon of fat-free honey mustard dressing on my salad every day…loads of hidden sugar driving up my insulin production and converting carbs into fat! No wonder I had developed love handles!!

I lost five pounds the first week, and four pounds the week after that. Within two months, I was down almost thirty pounds, my goal. I did hit a plateau for about three weeks, and then I started losing again. When I went on vacation, I didn’t exercise for almost three weeks and figured I had gained a ton. But no, I had lost three more pounds, even after all the ice cream I cheated with!

It is very easy to eat this way, and I will eat like this for the rest of my life. It’s not dieting, it’s just changing the way you eat. For the first three weeks, I tracked carbs and sugar grams obsessively, and re-read the book about ten times. Then I got in my groove and no longer track a thing on paper. At first I bought quite a bit of the more expensive items, like Ezekiel bread (fantastic, by the way) and online ketchup. But I have found 45-cal bread locally that works, it’s just much more bland. I highly recommend Joseph’s pancake syrup (made with maltitol, which is just fine on your tummy as long as you aren’t eating it in huge amounts!)I have opted for a few “illegal” substitutions for things I eat very little of, such as Heinz’ Sugar-free ketchup…it has sucralose (Splenda) which is not the best sugar substitute, but since I have less than a tablespoon a week, I don’t mind. My “healthy” fiber and protein bars (very expensive themselves) are long gone, as I now snack on Smokehouse Almonds, cheese sticks, and protein shakes instead. I swapped out my All-Bran and now eat Fiber One every morning and love, love, love that with a packet of Truvia and a large pour of almond milk! And in my cupboard I now have xylitol (Amazon’s got the best price on the 5 lb bag!) and Truvia instead of Splenda. And I never buy anything without reading the label…no sugar? Great…but does it have a ton of sucralose?

I also feel like a better mom…my kids love all-natural peanut butter and jams (you can make your own and save a jar!) made with xylitol. There’s no need to take away their milk (lots of natural sugar in that!) and go all crazy, but you can give them smart snacks to school, such as fishy crackers and pirate’s booty instead of fiber bars or fruit snacks…They also think the Xlear candy is super fun, and I don’t mind as it’s good for their teeth. They were raised on lower-sugar cereals, but I am reading labels a little more carefully. Honey nut cheerios are long gone, but puffed wheat and Rice Crispies (with Truvia) are considered a special treat when they tire of Fiber One! Their favorite cereal is definitely plain old instant oatmeal, sweetened with Truvia and cinnamon.

Jorge does gives lots of super easy recipes and weekly eating plans. I’ve never been able to follow a weekly menu, so didn’t bother trying. His recipes are wonderful, I just found a few that worked for me and rotate them around, trying a new one now and then when I am bored. I highly recommend the sugar free ice cream (kids think an ice cream maker is a riot), the chicken enchiladas, the pancakes, and pretty much every salad, sandwich and entree in the book! I haven’t started chowing down on bacon or french fries because old healthy habits die hard, but I have opted to eat more veggies in place of the lower amounts of fruits. Hard in the summer, but not so bad, really.

I think Jorge makes a great point, that people used to eat low-sugar diets all the time. Bags of sugar were kept stored on the top shelf, waiting for a special ocassion to make birthday cakes and Christmas goodies with, and fruit and fruit juices were only available locally and in season. We have become so lazy, eating all these pre-packaged foods, and getting anything we want from anywhere in the world year-round. No wonder America has a sweet tooth! The nice thing about eating this way is you actually start to lose your sweet tooth. Foods I used to long for actually taste artifial or too sugary for me.

In summary, the more sugar you eat, the higher your insulin. The higher the insulin, the more fat you store, even if it entered your body as a carb or a protein. So, eat less sugar, keep away from the artificial sweeteners such as sucralose and aspartame (which are found in almost every diet product out there!!), and lose weight. It’s easy. I’m proof positive…no more muffin tops, and only 5 pounds to my new goal of weighing what I did on my wedding day at age 24! Wahoooo!

Like a lot of folks, I also read the Motley Crue and Slash books and wonder if I’m the only person who noticed that Slash says HE saved Nikki Sixx from the O/D by piling him in the bathtub (not a mere mention of Adler) — Adler says HE saved Nikki (Slash was nowhere around) and (naturally) Nikki was out of it. I checked on the Slash reviews but it wasn’t mentioned in any reviews over there. That said, like Slash, like Motley Crue, I really did enjoy this book. It’s hilarous, it’s sad, it’s memorable. It reads quickly (I plowed through it in about 9 hours). The punishment this poor guy inflicted upon his body is incredible — I’m glad he commits in the book to staying sober. Wonder if it’ll hold…

My only real complaint about Good in Bed is the very last paragraph at the end of the book. I found it to be cheesy and reminiscent of a part in a Disney Movie (hopefully you’ll see what I mean when you read it). I wish Weiner would have ended the book one paragraph sooner, but other than that I honestly loved Good in Bed. It’s a great read and one that I would recommend to anyone.

I found it to be well crafted and dense. You should read Rules of Deception before reading this one as it’s a continuation of the last book. One of the better authors. The plot is a little bit ho-hum as almost everything has been done before in the past decade in the explosion of writers and books, but it’s not a bad plot. I won’t regurgitate it here, except to say it’s got to do with spies.

What I like about this book is the writing. The book is easy to read and easy to follow, that’s important as some of today’s best sellers have very bad writing in them and are hard to follow. I liked the characters, not 100% fully fleshed, but enough to keep my attention. The characters could have been deepened. Yes, there are a very few technical flaws, but the author can’t be blamed: there is no “Queen’s Guard”; I think the Scots Guards had the wrong appellation in the book; Graves is too young to be a retired colonel unless he was a lt. colonel and full colonel in name only, but these are minor and would only bother people conversant with military terms. Those didn’t really take away from my enjoyment of the book (and proves again the point that authors should only write about things they know about) but I’m definitely going to read the other books that this author has written.
