The Total Money Makeover: A Proven Plan for Financial Fitness Overview
The success stories speak for themselves in this book from money maestro Dave Ramsey. Instead of promising the normal dose of quick fixes, Ramsey offers a bold, no-nonsense approach to money matters, providing not only the how-to but also a grounded and uplifting hope for getting out of debt and achieving total financial health.
Ramsey debunks the many myths of money (exposing the dangers of cash advance, rent-to-own, debt consolidation) and attacks the illusions and downright deceptions of the American dream, which encourages nothing but overspending and massive amounts of debt. “Don’t even consider keeping up with the Joneses,” Ramsey declares in his typically candid style. “They’re broke!”
The Total Money Makeover isn’t theory. It works every single time. It works because it is simple. It works because it gets to the heart of the money problems: you.

… if, however, you’ve only floundered occasionally, as almost all of us have, you can probably find a different book out there that speaks more to your particular situation.
Being a school teacher that’s never made a huge amount of money and is paying all of my bills solo on my limited salary, I picked this book up thinking that it’d be a very good read, and helpful in guiding me towards better financial stability and freedom. And, really, this is a very good guide for someone like me. The commentary within prompted more than one “aha! moment”, as Oprah calls them, and the worksheets contained at the back of the book are greatly helpful for those of us that need someone to help us get it all down on paper. I’m pretty consistent with logging my monthly expenses, and have been carrying around a list outlining said expenses for years, as a reminder not to overspend, so I already had a strong foundation of putting it down on paper. But the rest of the budget lists contained at the back of the book just helped me to develop a strong plan for what to and not to spend my remaining pennies on each month, and the wisest ways to do so.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading Dave Ramsey’s “The Total Money Makeover” – the type is large, the text is easy to read and engaging, and the stories peppered throughout give you different viewpoints and keep the material feeling fresh. Keep in mind, though, that there are Christian scriptures peppered throughout, along with references to God. If you’re likely to find that offensive, then you might want to look for a different Financial Planning book that isn’t faith-based. However, by the end of my read, I walked away with many invaluable tips that I hadn’t had before. Keep in mind that all of his suggestions won’t apply to everyone. I believe that, depending on how dire your situation is (or not), you might have more or less wiggle room to pick and choose which of his suggestions to follow, which to file away for later use, and which to skip altogether. YOU are the reader, and YOU are the decider; as with any decision to limit your use/consumption of certain things, you have to adjust it so that it fits you best for long-term use, while still remaining effective, be it a diet, fitness regimen, or a financial plan. The worse your financial situation, the more highly I’d recommend that you read through this. The closer you are to being a trust fund baby (or creator), the more likely I feel that you’ll get more out of another financial adviser’s writings.
